This is a design where the customer has a bit of shade. As people are developing property along rivers and around lakes,
they are encountering shadier landscaping situations. It is always a challenge to give these customers
color in the shade, but it can be done.
For example we placed Annabelle Hydrangea -- with its masses of large
white flowers starting in July -- against dark green foliage. We suggested tying in Perennials like Variegated
Hosta, White Bleeding Hearts, and/or Lamium, which all have some varying degrees of white
coloring in their foliage or flowers. This arrangement compliments the white and green of the
Hydrangea.
After establishing this base, it is nice to tuck in spots of color with Perennials (Coralbells,
Astilbes, Bellflower, Daylilies) or Annuals (Impatiens, Begonias, Coleus) that serve as strong accents
in the landscape.
